English Day 1 – 23rd October 2018

Halloween is a popular celebration in Western and English-speaking countries. It is held to commemorate the faithful departed and while it is observed by many Christians, it has also taken on a secular flavour with many fun activities associated with horror.

The theme of this year’s first English Day was Halloween. The English Club organised a range of activities to pique students’ interest in using English to communicate.

Guess the Candy

A popular Halloween activity is for children and teens to ‘trick-or-treat’ with the ‘treat’ usually taking the form of a piece of candy. For students, we had 3 Halloween themed jars filled with candy.  The objective? Guess the amount of candy in the jar to win the whole jar.

Photo Booth

With monster masks, axes, pumpkin headbands and more, students could use props to have their ‘snaps’ taken in front of a backdrop of Halloween inspired images.

Fortune Teller

Our Fortune Teller often had a line of people waiting to know what their future held.  Were they in for a financial windfall?  Would their life be filled with good health?  Only the crystal ball could reveal it.

S1 Mummy Wrap

As in previous years, the S1 students were invited to participate in a mummy wrap. With one roll of toilet paper, the team with the best dressed mummy took home the honours.

In addition to the above activities, students also played Halloween trivia, increased their vocabulary with a word search, and made pumpkin lanterns.  The English Club also organised for students to decorate their own face masks and to learn about villains and heroes in horror films. As a special treat, the Sun Hoi Ambassadors painted images onto students’ hands such as spiders and snakes.
