It is the fourth consecutive year that we have the English Reading Buddy Programme which is under Language Across The Curriculum (LAC). The support from the school, and all reading mentees and mentors contributes to the success of the programme.
14 reading mentors from S. 3A met 13 reading mentees from S. 1 13 times on Wednesday afternoons from November 2016 to May 2017. The reading mentors helped their mentees with a different set of reading material in each meeting which lasted 40 minutes. They sometimes read a recipe, a passage about natural science and sometimes a problem to solve, a puzzle to tease their mind and so on.
All reading mentors were given a training before each meeting with their mentees. They then would work with their mentees by reading the materials aloud, explaining new vocabulary, answering comprehension questions and so forth.
A survey was conducted among 13 reading mentors and 12 mentees in the last reading session. 83% of the mentees enjoyed reading with their mentors while 85% of the mentors enjoyed helping their mentees to read. 83% of the mentees said they liked their mentors and 92% of the mentors liked their mentees. 92% of the mentees admitted that they made improvement in English reading.
