In alignment with the theme of this academic year’s “Mathematics and Science Week”, the Mathematics Department was honoured to have Mr Jasper Tsang Yok-sing, former President of the Legislative Council and a first-class honours graduate in Mathematics from the University of Hong Kong, visit our school on 29th May. He engaged in an inspiring dialogue on mathematical thinking with our senior secondary students, sharing the core concepts of “Mathematical Modelling” and the boundless joy of exploring mathematics.
During the seminar, Mr Tsang explained the five steps of mathematical modelling in an accessible manner, using everyday examples such as shopping discounts and engineering problems. He guided students to reflect on the discrepancy between mathematical models and real-world applications through engaging scenarios, such as “buy two get one free” and “300 workers completing a project in just 0.1 days”.
Through this seminar, students gained a clearer understanding of mathematical modelling. It not only broadened their mathematical horizons but also helped cultivate their habit of applying mathematical and logical thinking to their daily lives.
