Sun Hoi Ambassadors took part in the captioned game stall design competition, which provides a unique opportunity for students to showcase their interactive game systems and designs with an aim of raising public awareness on the importance of positive values and attitudes. Using painting, a new, innovative and trendy form of art, as the medium, our game stall was awarded the certificate of merit for our outstanding performance.
Sun Hoi Ambassadors wish to stimulate the creativity and imagination of young souls through painting, a new, innovative and trendy form of art. Meanwhile, the positivity is spread through the sharing of the volunteers and service receivers. At the same time, the hard work of the students is highly praised and proven through the awarding of the Outstanding Service Commendation by the VQ Foundation.
The Student of the Year is a territory-wide competition annually organized by South China Morning Post and sponsored by the Hong Kong Jockey Club. Coco Lee from 4B, as a rope skipping sportsperson who won many awards locally and internationally, went through successfully the interviews and outward bound programme for the contestants to get the award in the sportsperson category. The award presentation ceremony was on 25th May, 2019 in Kowloon Shangri-La Hotel. Shortlisted students of all categories were invited to attend the ceremony to celebrate the outstanding achievements.
Five students attended a charity event co-organized by Hong Kong Federation of Education Workers and Hong Kong Book Fair in July, 2018 and had their articles published in a book. Several copies of the book can be accessed at our school library for students to appreciate their excellent works.
Our alumni Ms. Chan Tsz Ching and Ms. Chan Yan Ching have achieved outstanding academic performance and received scholarships and awards in the academic year 2018/19 at the College of International Education of the Hong Kong Baptist University.
Our popular band took part in The Sound of Power The Sound of Band Competition, organized by the Church of United Brethren in Christ Social Service Division and sponsored by the Home Affairs Bureau and Youth Development Commission. The band took part in both the preliminary and final and was awarded three prizes, Overall Champion, Best Vocal and Best Guitarist. As the overall champion in the secondary school sector, the band received $1000 coupons and a trophy. In addition to that, Chan Sze Chun from 4B, the best vocal, and Luk Ka Ho from 4B, the best guitarist, each received a trophy.
We are pleased to announce that Batdee Putanead Nicholas of 4B and Natalie Mi of 3A performed brilliantly in the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups English Public Speaking Contest 2019. Nicholas finished top five in the District Preliminary Round, top ten in the District Semi-Final Round and participated in the District Final Round. Natalie finished top five in the District Preliminary Round and participated in the District Semi-Final Round. Despite being the very first contestants representing our school in inter-school public speaking competitions, they were highly praised by the adjudicators.
With dedication and hard work, our Chinese Orchestra has won the Gold Award in Joint School Music Competition 2019, the Bronze Prize in the Chinese Orchestra Contest of Hong Kong Youth Music Interflows, and accomplished the 71st Hong Kong Schools Music Speech Festival with a merit. Special thanks to our honourable conductor, Mr Pang for his time, patience and guidance.
Our popular band, comprising of mainly Form 4 students, took part in the Inter-School Music Competition 2019, held by the Joint School Music Association. The band performed in Youth Square on 12th April 2019 and was awarded for the outstanding performance.
19 members of our Drama Club took part in the Hong Kong School Drama Festival 2018/19 (Cantonese Category). Since a considerable number of participants had no prior experience, the whole group had 20 drama training sessions and several rehearsals before the actual performance on 7th March. We received three prizes, Award for Outstanding Script, Award for Outstanding Performer and Award for Outstanding Cooperation. Our students found it encouraging to receive the awards after spending so much time and effort on preparing for the show.
Liberal Studies teachers in Sun Hoi have always been encouraging students to read more about current affairs and analyze events objectively through critical thinking from multiple perspectives.
William Poon Chiu Leuk, a Sun Hoi student who is currently studying music in Hungary as an exchange student, took part in the Kiskoros Piano Etude Competition for his host school on 14th March 2019. He was one of the five representatives of his host school. It was a large competition with around 100 participants from 22 schools and a professional panel of judges.
William managed to win the Special Prize (Kulondij) with his performances of Czerny Etude op.299 no.19 and Chopin Etude op.25 no.2. Congratulations to William and his teachers for the outstanding achievement!
After intense practice for months, our Dance Team won the Excellent Award in the 55th Schools Dance Festival.
Outstanding Sun Hoi Student Award is an annual award to encourage students to develop their skills in multiple dimensions. Teachers may nominate students who have displayed their abilities in multiple aspects and the nominees would be interviewed by a panel consisting of Principal Chow, vice principals and teachers.
William Poon Chiu Leuk, a Sun Hoi student who is currently studying in Hungary as an exchange student, took part in the organization of a concert at his host school and performed in it. Knowing that many in Sun Hoi are excited to know more about his life as an exchange student in Hungary, William has decided to share his experience: Thank you everyone for coming to my piano solo concert!
This year, the English Department helped train more than 100 students, a total of 60 entries, to participate in the 70th Hong Kong Schools Speech Festival and our students have achieved wonderful results. Sun Hoi’s TWO English Choral Speaking groups and 4B Chan Sze Chun Caleb won accolades (Champion), plus FOUR First Runners-Up and SEVEN Second Runners-Up at the 70th Hong Kong Schools Speech Festival.
Our debating team consisting of Secondary 4 students participated in the EMI section of the debating contest organised by Hong Kong Professional Teachers' Union (HKPTU) on 10th December 2018. The motion was “Land reclamation is the best solution to Hong Kong’s housing crisis”. As the affirmative side, the team believed reclamation could provide sufficient land supply in response to the housing needs of the Hong Kong citizens. All our participants Lavin Wong (the first speaker), Victoria Chan (the second speaker) and Nick Batdee (the third speaker) demonstrated confidence in proposing their team case and questioning the opponents’ arguments. Their performance was highly appreciated by the adjudicator and the negative team.
Our 2014 alumni Mr. Chan Chong Wai was awarded First Class Honours for his outstanding academic performance at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Mr. Chan has recently finished his undergraduate study under the programme of Bachelor of Science in Radiography with a weighted GPA of 3.7 or above.
An amazing achievement for the Form 1 and 2 students in their Choral Speaking performance who were crowned champions with a record high of 90 points; the highest score for any team at Sun Hoi Directors’ College.
